St. Louis Cardinals starting pitcher Adam Wainwright will miss “several weeks” after suffering a groin strain during an off-field workout with Team USA at the World Baseball Classic, per MLB.com’s John Denton.

Wainwright was in line to start his seventh opening day for the Cardinals when they face the Toronto Blue Jays on March 30.
The 41-year-old made two starts for the USA, including the semifinal victory over Cuba. He threw eight total innings at the WBC, striking out five while allowing two runs.
He is the third player to have suffered a significant injury after playing in the tournament, joining Jose Altuve of the Houston Astros and Edwin Diaz of the New York Mets.
Altuve will miss upwards of two months after suffering a broken thumb while playing for Venezuela and Diaz is expected to miss the entire season after tearing his patellar tendon celebrating a Puerto Rico victory.
Entering his 18th big league season, Wainwright will start the year on the IL without a clear timetable for his return, reportedly opening a rotation spot for Jake Woodford.
In 2022, Wainwright made 32 starts, throwing 191.2 innings and finishing with a 3.71 ERA.
