The Ottawa Senators and Vancouver Canucks have been discussing a trade involving a pair of blueliners, Elliotte Friedman reported Saturday during the 32 Thoughts segment on Hockey Night in Canada.
Friedman said a Tyler Myers for Nikita Zaitsev swap was floated about, which would see Zaitsev head west to Vancouver, and Meyers off to the nation’s capital.
“I do think the two teams talked about it,” Friedman said. “It would give Vancouver a bit of cap relief, Ottawa help on defence. I don’t know where it stands right now, if it can be revived, but it was at some level discussed.”
Meyers is in his fourth season in Vancouver, and his name has come up lately in trade rumours. He has four assists through 15 games, and the big defender carries a $6 million cap hit. His contract expires after next season.
The Senators, meanwhile, recently assigned Zaitsev to the AHL to play with the Belleville Bulls.
