Maple Leafs defenceman Jordie Benn suffers ‘upper-body’ injury vs. Devils

The dramatically shorthanded Maple Leafs blue line has suffered yet another blow.

Already missing their three highest-paid defencemen, the Maple Leafs now look as though they could be without Jordie Benn, head coach Sheldon Keefe said after Wednesday’s 2-1 win over the Devils.

Keefe did not share many further details on the extent of Benn’s injury, describing the ailment as “upper-body,” and stating that the club doesn’t know the full extent of the injury at this time.

Benn left the Maple Leafs bench partway through the second period after he appeared to be labouring around the ice.

The 35-year-old did return to start the third period, however, but after playing just two shifts he returned to the room. Benn logged just 9:36 total ice time in the game.

Despite Benn’s absence, the Maple Leafs put an end to the Devils’ 13-game winning streak with the victory.
