The 34-year-old, known for his “Hamburglar” nickname, explained that an ankle injury picked up during his brief stint with the Montreal Canadiens in 2021-22 was the crux of his decision.
“As life throw more unexpected things my way, I am retiring from hockey,” Hammond said. “Unfortunately during my time in Montreal I hurt my ankle and I won’t be able to make a full recovery.”
Hammond played four games with the Canadiens, notching three wins. Montreal then traded Hammond to the New Jersey Devils during last season’s trade deadline in order for him to get playing time.
The Surrey, B.C. native attempted a comeback in the KHL this season for the Chelyabinsk Traktor playing two games before hanging up his skates.
Hammond is best known for his four seasons with the Ottawa Senators. In the Canadian capital, Hammond had a 27-14-6 total record.
His claim to fame came in 2014-15 where he posted an impressive 20-1-2 run after getting called up from AHL Binghamton. Hammond helped the Senators reach a wildcard spot for the 2015 Stanley Cup playoffs.
