“While this decision was not easy, all players have agreed this is the best decision moving forward,” the team said in a statement. “We would like to wish Jason all the best in his future endeavours on and off the ice.”

Gunnlaugson, who skipped his own squad during the previous six seasons, rejoined Team Carruthers this season heading into a new Olympic cycle. The 38-year-old previously played with skip Reid Carruthers for three seasons from 2005-08.

Team Carruthers is ninth in the world, fifth among Canadian clubs, on the WCF’s world team rankings. They won the PointsBet Invitational in September and have finished runners-up in two other tour events this fall but have also missed the playoffs in two of the three Pinty’s Grand Slam of Curling tournaments.

Carruthers’ next event is the Co-op Canadian Open, the fourth GSOC tournament of the season, running Jan. 10-15 in Camrose, Alta.
