Phelps, 36, pitched in both 2021 and 2022 for the Blue Jays, and was especially good last season, finishing with a 2.83 ERA over 63.2 innings. He was an important presence in the young club’s locker room, which the team thanked him for in its tweet.

He was also on the team back in 2019, making appearances in 17 games before being traded to the Chicago Cubs.

The right-hander had a lat injury derail his 2021 season with Toronto, and contemplated retirement before ultimately deciding to re-sign with the Canadian club en route to one of his most productive seasons as a pro.

The St. Louis native finishes with a career 3.80 ERA over 682.2 innings in the big leagues, and made appearances for eight different teams, including the Blue Jays and New York Yankees.
