Ovechkin had missed the morning skate in what was originally reported as a maintenance decision, but his condition was downgraded to ‘out’ shortly before the game. Anthony Mantha took Ovechkin’s spot on the top line in practice.
The 37-year-old Ovechkin had played 17:54 minutes in a win against the Phoenix Coyotes on Thursday.
The Capitals (25-17-6), who were just getting healthy with the returns of Tom Wilson and Nicklas Backstrom, are in the midst of a three-game road trip along the West coast.
