The Philadelphia Flyers are sitting out forward James van Reimsdyk while they find a suitable trading partner ahead of the March 3 deadline.
“Philly has made the decision that they are, indeed, moving him and have let teams know he is available,” Sportsnet’s Jeff Marek reported on the 32 Thoughts segment of Hockey Night in Canada. “We’ll watch teams like the Vegas Golden Knights, the Minnesota Wild and Dallas Stars.”
Marek also mentioned the Winnipeg Jets were shopping around for van Riemsdyk, but the recent addition of Nino Niederreiter to the forward group may have changed that.
“Philadelphia is expecting other teams to jump in at some point this week as well,” Marek said.
Van Riemsdyk is a pending UFA on the final year of a five-year, $35 million contract carrying an AAV of $7 million. He’s scored nine goals and 23 points in 50 games for the struggling Flyers and is ninth in scoring for them.
The 33-year-old was selected second-overall by the Flyers in 2007, but was traded to the Toronto Maple Leafs in 2012. He signed once more with the Flyers in free agency after the 2017-18 season.
