Canadian billionaire Steve Apostolopoulos is considering a bid for the NFL’s Washington Commanders, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports.

The Toronto native is the managing partner of Triple Group of Companies, a Toronto-based real estate firm. He’s also the founder of Six Ventures Inc., a private equity venture fund.
It’s not the first time the Apostolopoulos family has been linked to the NFL. Steve’s late father, Andreas, purchased the Pontiac Silverdome outside Detroit in 2009 after the Lions moved downtown. A plan to attract an MLS team never came to fruition.
Concerts and monster truck shows were held at the Silverdome site, which now is home to an Amazon fulfillment centre.
The family also has been behind the Durham Live casino facility in Pickering, Ont.
Schefter says Apostolopoulos is the third known bidder for the Commanders, joining Philadelphia 76ers/New Jersey Devils owner Josh Harris, who reportedly has Magic Johnson in his group, and Houston Rockets owner Tillman Fertitta.
Schefter says Apostolopoulos also recently held talks to buy the NBA’s Charlotte Hornets from Michael Jordan, but is now focused on the Commanders.
Commanders owners Dan and Tanya Snyder said last year they plan to sell the team. Forbes has estimated the value at $5.6 billion.
