New York also announced that Verlander will continue throwing and will be re-scanned in a week — at which time the team will provide an update.
The 40-year-old joined the Mets this off-season on a two-year, $86.66 million contract, tying teammate Max Scherzer’s MLB record for highest AAV.
Verlander is coming off an AL Cy Young award and a World Series-winning season with the Houston Astros. He posted a 1.75 ERA over 175 innings while striking out 185 hitters.
Entering his 18th MLB season, Verlander has built quite an impressive resume to this point. He has won two World Series, three AL Cy Youngs and the 2011 AL MVP. He has also racked up 244 career wins and ranks 12th all-time with 3198 strikeouts.
The Mets start their 2023 season with a series against the Marlins in Miami.
