Connor McDavid scored the 300th goal of his career on a shorthanded breakaway against the Los Angeles Kings Thursday night.
Intecepting defenceman Sean Durzi’s cross-seam pass, McDavid bolted past the last line of the Kings’ defence before screaming in on net and wiring a shot past Joonas Korpisalo for his 61st goal of the season.
The goal makes McDavid the third-fastest active player to hit the mark, doing so in just 563 games. Only Alex Ovechkin (473 games) and Steven Stamkos (550 games) hit the triple-century mark in less time.
McDavid also becomes the sixth player to score 300 goals with the Edmonton Oilers, following Wayne Gretzky, Jari Kurri, Glenn Anderson, Mark Messier, and teammate Leon Draisaitl, who hit the mark earlier this week.
The presumptive Hart Trophy favourite is putting the finishing touches on arguably the greatest season of the salary cap era. McDavid’s 61 goals are just four shy of Alex Ovechkin’s post-2005 record, while his 144 points are the most by any player this century.
