Canada’s Denis Shapovalov fended off Brandon Nakashima of the United States 6-4, 7-5, 4-6, 3-6, 6-3 during opening-round action at the French Open on Monday.
Shapovalov, from Richmond Hill, Ont., called a medical timeout prior to the decisive set as the southpaw appeared to receive treatment on his left shoulder.
The No. 26 seed fired six aces and won 74 per cent of first-serve points during the three-hour, 47-minute match but also committed 15 double faults and converted four of 11 break-point attempts.
Nakashima had four aces with five doubles and also won 74 per cent of first-serve points.
Shapovalov will now take on Matteo Arnaldi of Italy in the second round.
Meanwhile, Montreal’s Félix Auger-Aliassime fell in straight sets to Fabio Fognini from Italy. Fognini upset the No. 10 seed Auger-Aliassime 6-4, 6-4, 6-3.
Diana Shnaider from Russia eliminated Vancouver’s Rebecca Marino 6-3, 7-5 in women’s singles.
Bianca Andreescu of Mississauga, Ont., gets started against No. 21 seed Victoria Azarenka from Belarus on Tuesday.
Leylah Fernandez of Laval, Que., advanced to the second round with a 6-3, 1-6, 6-3 win over Poland’s Magda Linette on Sunday. Fernandez will next play Wednesday against Denmark’s Clara Tauson.
