Patrick Marleau is returning to San Jose.
The Sharks hired the former captain as a player development coach and hockey operations advisor, the team announced Friday.
His new role will see Marleau work with the team and prospects on on-ice skill development and serve as an advisor to the team’s general manager, Mike Grier.
Selected second overall by the San Jose Sharks in the 1997 NHL Draft, the Canadian forward spent 21 of his 23 seasons with the team. Marleau retired after earning the title of the NHL’s all-time regular season games-played leader (1,779 games) and racking up 1,197 points (566 goals, 631 assists). In February 2023, Marleau became the first player in franchise history to have his number retired.

“It’s rare that you get the opportunity to add someone to your organization that brings a level of talent and character like Patrick Marleau,” said Grier in a team release. “We are extremely happy to bring Patty back into the Sharks family as we continue building a team that our fans can be proud of.”
