If you often feel like a circus artiste, although a bad one, juggling balls constantly, hoping and praying none of them will drop and take your entire life with you, then you are not alone. Between laundry cycles, kitchen duties, house chores, childcare and countless other things, it might feel like you’re getting buried under a mountain of tasks, especially if you’re also someone who has a demanding work life.
Psychologist Dr Nisha Khanna said parents are the role models for their children. “Your kids learn and observe self-care, discipline, effective communication, conflict-resolution, basically everything from you.”
When you’re the blueprint on which your child’s building is going to be built, it is important you set the right example for them. The first step in doing that is striking a work-life balance. Yes, we know it sounds elusive, but we’re here to help.
Khanna said establishing a work-life balance will not only help in the holistic growth of your children but also yourself. “You’ll be able to handle things better; the quality of your relationships will be better too.”
Here are some ways she suggests you can create a balance your work and home life as a working parent.
Identify your priorities
Khanna puts this first on the list as when you identify your priorities, it is easier to do the other things on this list. “Recognise what is important for you, what isn’t. This will help you declutter your life easily,” she said.
Set boundaries
Learn how to say no, Khanna advises, as that will make your life much easier. “Work is a part of life, not your life. Give it designated time. This will also ensure better productivity,” she said.
Don’t forget to take care of yourself
While you’re taking of the family, don’t forget to take care of yourself, Khanna strongly highlighted. Parenting can be exhausting so you’re allowed to let off some steam every now and then. Indulge in things you like doing. Take out time just to relax.
Ask for support when you need it
Khanna advised delegating work to others, especially when you need all the help you can get. “Understand your weaknesses and strengths so that you can work around them and ask others to fill, both at home and work,” she said.
