Canadian swimming sensation Summer McIntosh cruised into the finals of the women’s 400-meter freestyle at the World Aquatics Championships in Japan Saturday.

McIntosh, the current world record holder in the event, finished with a time of 4 minutes 1.72 seconds in the preliminaries, good enough for third overall and placed her easily into the eight-women final. Her swim Saturday was well behind her world-record pace of 3 minutes 56.08 seconds.

United States Swimming legend Katie Ledecky bested the 16-year-old McIntosh in their heat, finishing with a preliminary best time of 4 minutes 0.80 seconds.

Australia’s Ariarne Titmus also finished with a better time than McIntosh, though Titmus swam in a different heat.

The three favourites will now turn their attention to the finals, which many are calling the most anticipated event of the entire eight-day program. The finals are scheduled to begin at 7:32 a.m. ET Sunday morning.
