The Arizona Diamondbacks have decided to designate left-hander Madison Bumgarner for assignment after he had a disappointing four starts to open the 2023 season, the Arizona Republic’s Nick Piecoro reported Thursday.

The move essentially ends Bumgarner’s time with the team.
After signing the 2014 World Series MVP to a five-year, $85-million deal in 2020, Arizona will eat the more than $34 million that remains on Bumgarner’s contract.
After he clears waivers, he can then sign with any team for the major league minimum of $720,000.
Over four starts this season, the left-hander posted a 10.26 ERA. He finishes his time with the Diamondbacks with a 5.23 ERA over 69 starts.
Even with the veteran’s shaky starts, the Diamondbacks have had a nice start to the 2023 season, sitting atop the NL West with an 11-8 record.
