Calgary Sports and Entertainment Corporation, the city of Calgary and Alberta Premier Danielle Smith are set to make an announcement on a future arena for the Calgary Flames on Tuesday afternoon.
The news conference set for 5:30 p.m. ET / 3:30 p.m. MT.
It comes less than a week before the writ is to drop for the May provincial election.
Smith has stated her support for a new arena in Calgary to house the National Hockey League’s Flames and wanted the province to get involved.
She said last October that the Saddledome has served the community well, but can no longer compete with new buildings across North America for events, concerts and sports.
The road to a new arena in Calgary has been long and arduous for all parties.
Back on Dec. 21, 2021, the City of Calgary notified their intent to pull out of an agreement with CSEC for the construction of a new arena. The agreement was officially terminated in January 2022.
The now-former Alberta Premier Jason Kenney said at the time that he was “disappointed that the City of Calgary decided to change the deal at the last minute.”
CSEC also had the CalgaryNext complex project shot down back in 2017 after the City of Calgary questioned its feasibility.
