Los Angeles Angels third baseman Anthony Rendon has received a five-game suspension and an undisclosed fine for his actions involving a fan in last Thursday’s game against the Oakland Athletics, MLB announced Monday.
Unless appealed, Rendon’s suspension is scheduled to begin Monday, when the Angels open a road series vs. the Seattle Mariners at T-Mobile Park. If Rendon elects to appeal, then the discipline will be held in abeyance until the process is complete.
Rendon went hitless and struck out twice in three at-bats in the contest against the Athletics. He left the Angels dugout and was on his way to the tunnel leading to the clubhouse when he stopped and apparently confronted a fan sitting near the railing.
Rendon accused the fan of calling him a slur. The man denied it, Rendon cussed at the fan and took a swipe at him with his left hand before walking away. Someone nearby caught the incident on video and posted it on social media.
