The Canadian men’s national soccer team ended their run at the 2022 FIFA World Cup without a single point. With a 2-1 loss to Morocco, the Canadians failed to pick up their first World Cup point in two participations. Canada can find solace in having broken the ice with the country’s first goal at a men’s World Cup, courtesy of Alphonso Davies in the second minute of a 4-1 loss to Croatia. With two wins and one draw, Morocco topped Group F. Joining them in the knockout round is Croatia, who bounced back from a loss in the opening match…

In a recent interview, Gisele Fetterman, activist wife of Democratic Pennsylvania Senator-elect John Fetterman, turned heads by stating that “historically, swimming in America is very racist”. “When you look at drowning statistics,” she explained, “it usually affects children of colour because of lack of access.” Conservative outlets were quick to brand Fetterman’s comments as “bizarre“, but she was right: Black children are three times as likely to drown as white children in the United States, and that ratio goes up to more than five times as likely for swimming pool deaths in particular. And all this is because access to pools,…

Captain Atiba Hutchinson, winger Richie Laryea and striker Jonathan David will come out of the starting lineup, as will key midfielder Stephen Eustaquio, who’s been nursing a hamstring injury. In place of Hutchinson, goalkeeper Milan Borjan will wear the captain’s armband. Borjan, Alistair Johnston, Kamal Miller, Steven Vitoria,…
Montreal, Canada – Rocco Placentino says it still feels surreal. Less than two years ago, Ismael Kone was playing football for CS Saint-Laurent, a semi-professional team in Montreal, where Placentino, a former midfielder with the Montreal Impact, is the sporting director. And now, at just 20 years old, Kone is competing on the sport’s biggest stage in front of tens of thousands of spectators at the 2022 World Cup. “We’re very proud of him, and it opens a door to the youth all over the world to say, ‘Maybe one day, it could be me.’ He’s quickly become a role…

Slumping output highlights darkening economic outlook for Asia in 2023 as China’s lockdowns upend supply chains.Factory output slumped widely across Asia in November as slowing global demand and uncertainty over the fallout from China’s strict COVID-19 lockdowns weighed on business sentiment. The results highlight Asia’s darkening economic outlook for 2023, as the lockdowns disrupt international supply and heighten fears of a further slump in its economy, the world’s second-largest. Amid the pandemic curbs, China’s factory activity shrank in November, a private survey showed on Thursday. The result implied weaker employment and economic growth in the fourth quarter. Manufacturing activity also contracted…
In the past, I found it easy to root against the imperialist teams, but that calculus gets complicated the more those teams change. Paris-born star Kylian Mbappé is the son of a Cameroonian father and a mother of Algerian descent. Canada’s Alphonso Davies was born in a refugee camp in Ghana. Twelve of the 26 players on the US team are Black, as many as the 1994, 1998, and 2002 teams combined. One of them, Sergiño Dest, was born in the Netherlands to a white Dutch mother and an American father whose ancestry traced to Suriname. On Tuesday, in the game’s…

A goal by Mathew Leckie gave Australia a 1-0 victory over Denmark and sent the Socceroos through to the last 16 of the…
Environmentalist says outgoing President Jair Bolsonaro handing his successor, Lula da Silva, ‘an Amazon in flames’.Deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon has fallen in the 12 months through July, new government data showed, as incoming President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva seeks to restore protection for the vital rainforest. National space agency (INPE) data released on Wednesday showed 11,568sq km (4,466sq miles) of forest cover was destroyed in the Brazilian Amazon from August 2021 to July 2022 – an area larger than Qatar.
